If you did Danzan Ryu Jujitsu in Southern California in the 1970’s and 80’s you probably knew John Quijano.
He was a student of Prof. James Marcinkus at Penmar Judo Kai. John became my Sensei for about 4 years and got me to my Nidan with the SCJA
He was the very first person to teach me any Shinyo. John had a park and rec class in the San Fernando Valley, and I had one at Petit Park in Granada Hills. We would help at each other’s classes up until the 1994 earthquake which claimed both centers. John moved up to the Oakland area with his lovely wife G Billie Quijano, after which we saw much less of each other. But, as luck would have it, I started teaching at an event in Oakland once a year at the same dojo where John worked out. The Sensei there was also a former Marcinkus student. It was a delight to once again be able to work out with John
I believe the year was 2011 and it was the 100 Birthday Seminar of Prof Sig Kufferath. At this event, John was taking his Yodan exam, 4th Degree black belt. I was on the panel examining him. Talk about a change of events. Once my teacher is now the student and I’m examining him. Needless to say, he did a fantastic job and was promoted that night to his new rank.
After a long battle with brain cancer, John passed away early on the morning of February 22. He fought it so hard for all these years — this picture is from October of 2018. I will miss my friend, my Sensei, my brother. I hope you are in a better place now. I love you John. Thanks for everything you gave me along my path with jujitsu.
